Science For  All

Cliff homework
Here is the text and pictures for the interpretation of rocks in a cliff homework. All you need to do is to copy, paste and tart it up ready for use!

Challenging version:

Task 1 – put the title of this sheet on the next fresh page of your exercise book and copy the following:

The rocks that form the Earth have been laid down over a period of thousands of millions of years. The oldest rocks are usually at the bottom of the pile. The type of rock that is formed in a particular area depends on the conditions.. Below is a list of conditions that form some kinds of rock::

Basalt is a rock that comes out of a volcano
Sandstone is a rock that forms where a river meets the sea
Limestone is a rock that is formed in a warm, shallow sea (like the Caribbean Sea in the West Indies)
Mudstone is a rock that forms in deep oceans
Arkose is a rock that forms in a hot desert

The rocks are formed as whole areas of the Earth’s surface are uplifted or sink down. The features that we see at the surface today are formed when the rocks are uplifted, weathered and eroded..

Task 2 – Underline any igneous rocks mentioned above in one colour and sedimentary rocks in another colour (remember to put a key to say which is which).

Task 3 – Copy the diagram below:

Task 4 – Look at the diagram you have just drawn and use the information you copied to write the story of the cliff. Think about whether or not the land has sunk down or been uplifted as each layer has formed. If you get time, draw a series of diagrams or cartoons to illustrate your story.
